What it is

The story behind soapstone.

Soapstone

What we love about it

  • Non-porous, never needs sealing to resist stains
  • Extremely heat-resistant, set hot pans directly on it
  • Acid-proof, won't etch from wine, lemon, or tomato
  • Minor scratches sand out, surface is repairable
  • Develops a rich, characterful patina over time

What to know before buying

  • Softer surface, scratches and dents more easily (but sandable)
  • Limited color range (charcoal, grey, green-grey)
  • Darkens over time, especially when oiled

Care & maintenance

Wipe with soap and water. Apply mineral oil periodically to even out the patina (optional). Sand out minor scratches with fine sandpaper.

Typical price range
$70 – $160 / sq ft installed

Typical range for a full kitchen install (template, fabricate, install). Final quote depends on slab, edge profile, and cutouts.
